There are support groups and research groups for every kind of disability imagineable. These citizens do have a voice, it is not very loud because, while individual groups may be able to make small inroads into the political power structure of the federal and state governments, they are not heard by the majority of Americans. The Unified Voice of Disabled America want to change this.
Our mission is to become the Squeaky Wheel that must be oiled. We want the rest of America to know that because we have the Americans with Disabilities Act that addresses disabilities, that does not mean these laws are being enforced fairly and correctly.
Try to go shopping, (other than at super markets), at retail stores, banks, public buildings, and US Post Offices that do not have automatic doors so we can access. Try to find Automatic Doors that stay open from the time they are triggered to open until the slowest person with a disability gets through.
Handicap parking spots. Handicap parking all should be 16 feet wide. There are a lot only 8 feet wide, not allowing a van with a lift to fit or a car that has to put a handicap person into a wheel chair. Why aren't these handicap parking spots 16 feet wide and close to a door? Could a disabled person using a wheel chair, automatic cart, walker or four-legged cane get to the sidewalk without having to dance with the traffic?
Look at the open curbs and sidewalks accessibility. Most of them are too steep for a disabled person using an appliance to get up or down without falling. Some curbs or open walks are not wide enough to be used by a large wheel chair, walker or four-legged cane. Some of them are put in front of obstacles making them impossible to use.
We challenge every politician to rent or borrow a wheel chair, walker or four-legged cane and use it for one week. See how it feels to lose your independence and dignity. See what it feels like everyday to fight our war to make sure we make it through the day. See how it feels to know that you will not be hired since you have a disability. See how it feels knowing you might be fired if they find out you have a crippling disease. Whether we are 2 or a 102 years old, we have rights through the Constitution and The Americans with Disabilities Act.
We welcome you to the United Voice of Disabled America. There are more than fifty-four million Americans with disabilities. We come from every color, race, religion and political conviction. We have disabilities caused by crippling diseases, accidents, or are veterans injured in war. We are persons that are blind, hard of hearing and senior citizens who need assistance. We all have different disabilities, but we all have one thing in common, ACCESSIBILITY. Access means access to public buildings, retail stores, employment, and the opportunity to do and go anywhere at anytime. The Unified Voice of Disabled America wants to make this happen with your help.
To become a voice unifying all peoples with disabilities in America
To cause changes to be instituted in state and federal laws
To change for the better how people are treated by governmental agencies
To put peoples with disabilities on access inspection teams
To have a voice in the ruling bodies of America that decide how we are treated
